The importance of reference letter is well-known as there are few companies and lots of universities who don’t allow you to join unless and until you submit few reference letters. Generally, it is thought that reference letters are written to emphasize the fact that a student or employee is perfect candidate for offered position. It however is nothing more than a misconception because negative recommendation letters do exist in this world.

Negative recommendations are not common but they exist nevertheless. Not all teachers and employers would write negative recommendation letter for you. Actually, a letter that may create a negative impact on a reader is also regarded as a negative reference letter. In this type of letter there will be only few sentences used by the writer which will have a negative impact. It means that this will not be a true example of a negative recommendation letter but it can still be considered as one.

Letters containing some negative information are those where write may write about a weakness of the candidate. For instance, an employer writing a perfect letter may spoil it just by mentioning that the candidate is not in a position to perform well in some specific situation. This type of letter should be avoided as this can really cost you a job. You must always talk with a person in advance about writing a reference letter. If he thinks that there are some negative points to discuss in letter, don’t ask him to write letter for you.
